The principle focus of Vuyiroli is destitute elderly people, who are abandoned and uncared for. Often they are physically impaired or mentally ill and may be dying. Vuyiroli’s major activity is rescuing the dying and the elderly from the Streets. The target area is the streets of Chennai, but it is hoped that this will expand to cover other towns and cities of India.
The specific health problems faced by older people we have met are poor eyesight, broken and weak limbs and malnutrition. In some cases asthma and other respiratory problems are found to be common. Psychological and emotional stresses contribute to further deterioration in their health.
Then, there is the provision of good food and medical care.
Also important is the development of personal relationships, this helps to build self-esteem, to re-establish their dignity and to create of a sense of being in the family fold.
Between January 2000 and December 2006, 159 old aged people have been touched by our service.
18 were found and helped and then handed over to their children, while others were enabled to become self-dependent.
47 of the old aged people passed away and were buried with due respect.
At present Vuyiroli is caring for 20 elderly destitute.
